The important of a SKU naming convention

To often the SKU naming convention is neglected. This can lead to problems when:

  1. Import or updating products using a CSV
  2. Looking up products

Take this example:

Look at error (2), whitespaces. This basically means that SKUs have been created either with leading or trailing spaces, and Magento is not able to look those products up in the catalog for update.

This requires a manual fix of SKUs before the update is tried again. For a small catalog it’s ok, but what if you had tens of thousands of products, or more?

This is why you should pay careful attention to your SKU naming policy. My personal preference is this:

  • Start with a letter
  • No spaces, not even in the middle
  • Only alpha numeric characters, underscore and hyphen (ascii).
  • No diacritics
